Composite Braiding Ltd are leaders in thermoplastic composite braiding technology. They use an innovative process providing businesses in transportation, infrastructure, power, engineering and sports sectors with benefits in terms of strength of material, and weight and cost savings.

The team have a wide range of industry skills with extensive knowledge. Steve Barbour – Managing Director – has taken a previously labour intensive process and made it highly automated. This enables lightweight, extremely strong components to be produced in higher volumes that can be at comparable costs to traditional materials.

The innovative application of technology, when applied to combining materials such as carbon, glass or basalt fibres with a thermoplastic, produces an advanced composite which has the strength to replace materials such as steel whilst being 50-60% lighter.

Why engage with Enscite?

Steve Barbour discusses how the company started to work with Enscite.

“When I was setting up the business I was casting around for help. I’m an experienced business person with nineteen years at Rolls-Royce and I’ve been running composite companies since I left there in 2004. Despite that, when I was setting the company up I was looking for business support in terms of grant funding, advice and general support.”

What was the impact of Enscite?

“They went through the competitive assessment with me and made a host of recommendations. It’s always good to have your thoughts challenged in a constructive way. Working with Enscite meant I wasn’t working alone. I had access to a team of impartial multi-skilled people who could look at my plans and help me develop the future direction. It was absolutely vital for me to engage with the team. I could have been too sure of myself and of the direction I was taking. The process allowed me to assess the plans and gain valuable inputs.”

“We are based at the iHub where we can network with other businesses, access Enscite support and access technical facilities, which are all factors aiding our rapid growth.”

What was the companies experience of Enscite?

“Enscite is part of a microcosm of support and through the process I have accessed support form Derby Connect and Marketing Derby, which would be useful for any business but particularly for a manufacturing business. I was already well-connected but the networking opportunities offered, especially for a less experienced start up, would be invaluable.”
